During the 1920s, Addison Mizner was one of the most famous and most discussed living architects in America. He moved to Palm Beach in 1918 and discovered wooden structures, a style he considered more suitable for colder weather. It was then that he incorporated his very own style, something the region had never seen before. Mizner created what is now known as Mediterranean Revival, incorporating his experiences in warmer climates, including Spain and Latin America. He was also known to antique his projects by purposefully inflicting damage to its materials, evoking a lived-in, aged look to his buildings. Today, the iconic Mizner style lives on and can be seen in his actual work — like the Boca Raton Resort & Club in Boca Raton and The Everglades Club in Palm Beach — and the work he inspired modern architects to create in his wake. Let's take a look at the many properties for sale in South Florida with traces of his influence, including Mediterranean Revival façades, iron railings, distressed wood, and an overall Old World feel. These stunning properties pay tribute to this renowned designer and visionary who left a lasting legacy on the architecture of South Florida.

Boasting oceanfront bistros, award-winning eateries, refined wine bars, and lively cocktail lounges, Fort Lauderdale is one of the best places to wine and dine in South Florida. However, there's a hidden side to the city's social scene you may not realize exists in this day and age. Fort Lauderdale is home to a number of speakeasies and speakeasy-esque bars, some of which are brand new and others that date all the way back to the Prohibition Era. Explore these hidden bars and lounges tucked behind curtains and padlocked doors to encounter a secret world of mixology in the heart of our city.

The Hideaway

The Hideaway Fort Lauderdale

While there is certainly no shortage of places to grab a cocktail in Fort Lauderdale, The Hideaway offers a complete historic experience. Located in the classic Bryan building at the easternmost tip of Las Olas Boulevard, The Hideaway offers a rare glimpse into Fort Lauderdale's past. In fact, this building was one of the first commercial buildings built after a fire destroyed much of the city in 1912. So this building was born just before the Prohibition Era, making The Hideaway one of the most true-to-history environments for sipping on handcrafted cocktails in the city — even though the bar itself opened in late 2017.  The space has an industrial chic feel, complete with original Dade County pine, refurbished and reclaimed decor, stamped tin ceilings, and custom period furniture. Award-winning mixologist Carla Rivera oversees the drink menu, which offers a range of artisanal cocktails and craft beers. Complement your drink with a bite to eat from the eclectic rotating counter-style menu.

Unit B

Unit B Fort Lauderdale

You may have visited the Brass Tap without even realizing this hidden gem was just around the corner. Inside the gastropub, there's a plain wooden door that appears to lead into a storage closet — but it reveals so much more. To enter, you'll need a personalized code, which you must access in advance by filling out a form on Unit B's website. This code will only work that same day and you must access a new code for a repeat visit. Once inside, savor the swanky, lounge interior and the wide selection of Prohibition-era cocktails. A favorite is the Havana, a straightforward combination of rum, Cuban colada syrup, and black walnut bitters. Another classic is the 21st Amendment, made with scotch, fresh lemon juice, and orange blossom honey and ginger syrups. Everything here is handled with precision, from the creation of cocktails to the first-class service. Unit B is open from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m. Thursday through Sunday.

Apothecary 330

Behold — another secret bar hidden in an unassuming establishment. Step inside Pizza Craft near Esplanade Park and look for the black curtain, which shields this upscale speakeasy from plain sight. Apothecary 330 features more than 300 whiskeys, over 20 beers on tap, and an absinthe drip. You will be served by "bar chefs" rather than bartenders, who can walk you through the sophisticated cocktail list. Take a look at the house rules before making your debut at Apothecary 330, as they have a strict semi-formal dress code among other rules. The vibe here is sophisticated and vintage, providing the perfect atmosphere for sipping on a Prohibition-era cocktail.

Renowned as "the Venice of America," Fort Lauderdale offers a myriad of resort-style luxuries for residents and visitors alike. From its renowned yachting lifestyle to its thriving job market, Fort Lauderdale is an excellent city to call home. In fact, here are a handful of reasons you should consider moving to this year-round resort town nestled along the sunny Atlantic Coast!

1. Plenty of Job Opportunities

Jobs in Fort Lauderdale Employment options can be a weighty factor when considering a move. Thankfully, Fort Lauderdale has no shortage of job opportunities in a wide range of fields. With an unemployment rate of 2.8 percent (September 2018), Fort Lauderdale is a great place to live and work. The city is home to a number of headquarters for major companies, including AutoNation, Commcare Pharmacy, Citrix Systems, DHL Express, SmartWater, Spirit Airlines and Hotwire Communications. In 2018, Fort Lauderdale was named the seventh best city for summer jobs by WalletHub and the 21st best city to start a career in.

2. Paradise for Yachters

Yachting in Fort Lauderdale Nicknamed "the Venice of America," Fort Lauderdale is extremely appealing to yachters, boaters and watersports enthusiasts. The city is comprised of an extensive network of canals and waterways, acting as a roadway for vessels, with the renowned Intracoastal Waterway as the nautical highway. This 3,000-mile waterway allows convenient ocean access for yachts, creates a beautiful backdrop for estates in its path, and offers calmer waters for smaller boats to maneuver. The Intracoastal features several smaller canals, providing more waterfront frontage for properties and plenty of dockage for yachts and boats of all sizes. Thanks to the Intracoastal Waterway weaving through all of South Florida's coastal cities, yachters can easily access the ocean for a quick cruise — or even a sailing trip to the Bahamas.

3. Gorgeous Properties

4. Fantastic Schools

Schools in Fort Lauderdale Education is another important factor when considering a move, whether you have toddlers looking to enter preschool or teenagers checking out colleges. Fort Lauderdale is home to a number of exceptional schools, most of which fall under Broward County Public Schools, the sixth-largest school district in the nation and the second-largest in the state. Many of the schools in Fort Lauderdale have received a 9 or 10 rating on GreatSchools, a resource for local school information. Fort Lauderdale is also home to a number of colleges and universities, including Keiser University, Jersey College, City College, the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale, and more.

5. Kid-Friendly Activities

Kid-Friendly Activities in Fort Lauderdale In addition to the city's resort-style atmosphere, vibrant nightlife and other luxurious amenities, the city is a haven for little ones. There are plenty of kid-friendly activities in Fort Lauderdale, including boat and trolley rides, indoor playgrounds, fascinating museums, and endless outdoor recreation. Take a look at some of our favorite things to do with kids in Fort Lauderdale, with options to suit all ages and interests!

6. Exceptional Weather

Weather in Fort Lauderdale The weather in Fort Lauderdale is second to none. Many move to the area to get an extra dose of sunshine all year long, as South Florida is the only part of the continental US with a tropical climate. Fort Lauderdale maintains relatively moderate temperatures all year long, with an average annual temperature of 75.5°F and an estimated 3,000 hours of sunshine per year. The ever-present sunshine completes the picture-perfect setting for both residents and visitors. In fact, most days in South Florida are considered "mostly sunny" by National Weather Service standards.

7. Endless Shopping

Considered the epicenter of activity in Fort Lauderdale, the lively Las Olas Boulevard is lined with a myriad of shops, eateries, bars and other local businesses to keep you entertained all day (and night!) long. Whether you're looking for upscale home decor, a new dress for an upcoming event, or a gift for the holidays, there is a shop on Las Olas for you.

8. Incredible Cuisine

Food in Fort Lauderdale Fort Lauderdale is home to a number of exceptional eateries, from quaint beachside cafes to extravagant date night destinations. Not surprisingly, the city has plenty of seafood restaurants to choose from, including 15th Street Fisheries, 3030 Ocean, Boatyard, G & B Oyster Bar, Lobster Bar Sea Grille, Burlock Coast, and more. The city is constantly adding new restaurants to its roster — including 10 new restaurants that arrived in 2017 and early 2018. The city is also a haven for vegans and vegetarians! And more often than not, you can enjoy a picturesque water view from your table.

9. Favorable Tax Laws

Tax Laws in Florida On a more practical note, many people have moved to South Florida from other cities as a result of tax laws negatively affecting those cities, especially New York. In fact, New York was number 49 among the 50 states and the District of Columbia on WalletHub's list of which states benefit the most from the changes to the federal tax law that took effect last year. And Florida rests at a reasonable spot at number 21. For high-income earners, tax law implications are that much more significant. This migration has fueled a surge in prices for luxury homes in Florida, which jumped 16 percent in the second quarter compared to 2017. Prices will continue to rise with the increase in demand, which in turn increases the urgency for affluent buyers to act fast.

10. Upscale Communities

Communities in Fort Lauderdale Fort Lauderdale is filled with a myriad of exceptional communities, each offering a unique set of amenities, characteristics, landscape and charm. Those moving to the area can easily find a community to match their lifestyle, whether they wish to be steps from the ocean or tucked away in a gated community surrounded by nature. Home to a number of art walks and artistic events, FATVillage and the MASS District are sanctuaries for creativity in the city.

As a boutique independent real estate company serving South Florida, we are passionate about all things local. There are so many hard-working entrepreneurs and small business owners dotting the landscape of our beloved communities, and we feel strongly about supporting their efforts however we can. Coffee is something many of us consume on a regular — if not daily — basis. Your coffee ritual is the perfect opportunity to support local roasters in Fort Lauderdale, whether you like to venture to a coffee shop or prefer to brew your own pot of coffee at home every morning. Get to know these excellent coffee roasters in Fort Lauderdale and find out how you can access their freshly roasted beans or brewed coffee on a regular basis.

Calusa Coffee Roasters

161 East Commercial Boulevard
Calusa Coffee Roasters is one of Fort Lauderdale's most beloved specialty coffee roasters. Founder Steven Hodel was previously in the travel business and specialized in planning Central and South America vacations, which exposed him to the world of coffee. The building that once housed his travel company is now home to Calusa Coffee Roasters. At Calusa, they take great care in inspecting and selecting the highest quality beans available, sourced from countries across South America, Central America, and Africa. They then roast the beans in small batches, ensuring the best possible quality. Stop by the shop to enjoy a fresh cup of coffee in their inviting environment, pick up a bag to enjoy at home, or have it shipped to your home by shopping their selection online. They roast the beans the day after you order it and ship USPS Priority so you can receive the most freshly roasted coffee delivered right to your door!

The main mission of Argyle Coffee Roasters is to showcase what it means to drink better coffee. Argyle is a wholesale coffee roasting company primarily working business to business, and does not operate in traditional coffee shop fashion. The Argyle team starts with raw, green coffee and utilizes a fair mix of science and art to create the final roasted bean. Stop by the warehouse from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Saturdays to meet Manny and his wife, learn about their process, and of course sample some delicious coffee. Or order their exceptional coffees from the comfort of your own home and have them delivered to your doorstep! While Argyle mostly operates business to business, they often offer workshops or events open to the public.

The Grind Coffee Project

While it is not a roaster, The Grind Coffee Project is a mecca for coffee purists and connoisseurs. Owner Yoni Martin originally operated a home espresso bar and roaster in his garage, which eventually gained traction with his friends and family, who would sample his creations in his living room and engage in conversation. He was inspired to open a coffee shop after receiving positive feedback about his coffee at a local farmers' market. Today, you can sample expertly brewed coffee at The Grind Project, which has received attention for not allowing customers to add cream or sugar to their coffee. Yoni brews coffee sourced from some of the most renowned and respected roasters in the world — so you can always expect only the best of the best from this educated and sophisticated shop. Peruse the selection of coffee available online from The Grind Coffee Project! You can even become a member of their Coffee of the Month Club to receive a bag of coffee to either pick up at the cafe or have delivered to your door every two weeks for six months.

Fitness is the utmost priority for many South Florida residents. In fact, Fort Lauderdale recently ranked number 12 on the list of the 50 healthiest cities in the country! This statistic is reflected in the many healthy eateries and juice bars across town, as well as the wide variety of gyms and classes that span our region. While each of these gyms boasts a unique flair and an army of top-notch personal trainers ready to whip you into shape, we believe that working out on the beach is good for the mind as well as the body. We rounded up some of our favorite workout classes or facilities on the beach, so you can work on your fitness to the soundtrack of rolling waves and seabirds, and enjoy views of the sweeping Florida sky.

The Gym Fort Lauderdale

The Gym

The Gym certainly is a gem when it comes to workout facilities, boasting an open-air rooftop with panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean and Intracoastal Waterway. While the views are spectacular at any time of day, many choose to get their sweat on in the early hours or right before dinner, which allows them to witness the South Florida sky during sunrise or sunset. Workout your way with a wide array of free weights, stationary bikes, benches and other equipment, or enlist a personal trainer to hold you accountable. You also have the option to enroll in a group fitness class, or take advantage of the full-service indoor gym when the weather turns sour! Afterward, enjoy cooling down with a leisurely walk on the beach. 3001 SE 5th St, Fort Lauderdale

Fort Lauderdale Beach Yoga

There is nothing more invigorating than participating in a yoga flow on the sand, under the sun, with the sound of crashing waves in the background. Luckily, this option is available to you every Thursday, Saturday and Sunday year round, thanks to Fort Lauderdale Beach Yoga. The best of Fort Lauderdale's yoga instructors will guide you through challenging hatha flow classes in the morning, or help you wind down your day with a yin meditation class at sunset (during the summer months). While donations are encouraged, you will not be bound by any membership fees, and are free to come enjoy the class of your choice at your leisure. Classes Take Place on the Fort Lauderdale Beach one block South of Sunrise Blvd, Next to Lifeguard Station #13

The Calisthenics Park on the Beach

Take control of your own workout routine at the calisthenics park on the beach. This free, public  workout facility is built into the sand, and includes all of the equipment you need to design your own full-body workout under the sun and by the water. Exercise is vital to maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Not only is it good for your body, it is rejuvenating to your mind, soul and overall well-being. While there are a number of traditional gyms and fitness centers scattered throughout the region, let's explore some out-of-the-box options for exercise. With all of the sun we get in the Sunshine State, it's only right to head outside for some of these activities. However, there are a few indoor options as well — perfect for a rainy day workout or a break from the summertime heat.

Outdoor Activities

Yoga at the Beach

Yoga on the Beach As if the practice of yoga wasn't rejuvenating and relaxing enough, imagine attending a yoga class with nothing in sight but the serene Atlantic Ocean. Take in the calming sounds of ocean waves lapping on the shore, breathe in the fresh salty sea smell, and admire the beauty of a glorious sparkly backdrop while you do Yoga at the Beach in Boca Raton. They believe yoga classes are best done in relaxing and natural environments, such as at parks, on the beach or overlooking the Intracoastal. Yoga at the Beach is suitable for both new and intermediate yoga students. Each month, they offer full moon yoga classes, sunset yoga classes, and workout yoga classes!

Tennis

Tennis Many South Florida residents enjoy the luxury of a private tennis court — either in their community or even their own backyard. This is a convenient way to remain on top of your game and stay in shape, as this leisurely yet fast-paced activity will get your heart pumping. If you do not have a tennis court nearby, consider joining a local country club with tennis courts on site. Some of the area's best private golf courses are joined by exceptional tennis facilities! Boca West Country Club has an extensive tennis program boasting more than 30 Hydro courts surrounded by lush vegetation and gorgeous views of their five-star golf courses.

Swimming

Swimming With immediate ocean access and a complicated network of waterways weaving throughout the area, South Florida is positioned to be the perfect place to go swimming. Whether you do laps in a resort-style pool located right in your backyard or community, or take a dip in natural surrounding waters, swimming is the perfect way to work out and cool off simultaneously. And of course, swimming is easy on your joints and relieves your body from strenuous pressure you might experience in a gym setting. Some of the best pools dedicated to lap swimming can be found at the Swim and Racquet Center of Greater Boca Raton or the expansive Fort Lauderdale Aquatic Complex, featuring three large outdoor lap pools.

Stand-Up Paddleboarding

Paddleboarding If you have yet to try stand-up paddleboarding, you are in for a treat. This sport has gained popularity as of late, as it is both challenging and laid-back, allowing you to experience the ocean, a river or lake from a new perspective. Paddleboards look like a surfboard but are much longer, making balance easier — for those as young as six years old all the way up to participants in their 80s. Sunrise Paddleboards is located along the Middle River in Fort Lauderdale, where you can surf in the ocean, explore the river, or join their popular "Venice of America" tour on the Intracoastal. Work out your core and experience some of the area's most breathtaking sights by paddleboarding with Sunrise Paddleboards.

Cycling, Walking or Jogging

Running, Walking and Cycling in South Florida This may seem like an obvious way to exercise, but why not try a change of scenery from your regular route? Or if you're an avid treadmill user, get outside for a dose of fresh air! Take a trip to the historic Jungle Trail, spanning 8 miles along a barrier island in Vero Beach. This sandy trail is included on the National Register of Historic Places, as it was built in the 1920s for citrus growers to haul produce up and down the barrier island. Today, it is used primarily for cyclists, walkers and joggers, who enjoy varied vistas along this scenic trail, from wildlife-dense tropics to river views, and everything in between.
